I just realized that Monterey is king of the hill
"What isn't?" Fourteen-year-old Theodore jumped easily over a narrow creek, too focused on the virtually invisible path to look back at his friend.
"All... this!" Mallory paused at the edge of said creek, giving a gesturing grandiose encompassing the serene, meadowed landscape. Edward stopped short, barely avoiding walking into him. "I thought we could go out around town, you know?"
Theodore did finally look back at that, his expression nonplussed. "How is that an adventure?"
"Well, it's..." Mallory poked a toe into the dirt of the creek's bank. "That's what people do in books, you know."
"What, no!"
"Different books, Ted," Edward remarked matter-of-factly, perching on a small rock halfway across the water before taking another small hop to the other side. "Like those Lord Monterey stories, with the drunks and harlots."
"Yes!" Mallory nodded enthusiastically. "Like those!"
