cats and dogs
It wasn't all that much of a surprise to discover his new owner kept a cat. Humans kept pets, and being an Ashaneva living in a city like this, his owner practically was a human. But as Jeska watched the way Leo interacted with the cat - compared it to the way he interacted with him - he was starting to realize with no little humiliation that Belonging to this man, he ranked lower than a mere cat. He might be a halfbreed, but so was his owner!
At that moment, Jeska was alone in his new home, as aforementioned owner had gone out on some errand. Alone, with the cat.
He glared at the animal, resisting the urge to snarl but feeling his ears pin back in annoyance. He really hated his ears.
The cat, meanwhile, didn't seem particularly keen on his presence, either. But not afraid, just... displeased, like it considered Jeska to be an interloper on its territory.
It was a fucking cat. Jeska snarled at it as it wandered closer to him and the animal just ignored him. Like it knew he couldn't actually touch it. Cocky little bitch.
He growled this time, baring his teeth - sharp fangs, to go with the stupid ears and tail - and the cat just hissed back before continuing on its way across the room. Jeska hung his head, feeling his ears and tail droop in humiliated defeat. He couldn't even intimidate a tame animal the size of his arm; a real dog would probably do a better job. He was outranked and outclassed by mere animals.
Why was he even here? His owner could've just gotten another cat.

"Are you jealous?"
Jeska tried not to bristle at the tone - was his owner laughing at him? Calling him jealous, of a mere cat? "No, sir."
"Mm. You know, I don't think I ever properly introduced you to her. Would you mind coming over here?"
He minded, all right - he wanted nothing to do with that cat, or with wanting the cat's spot on Leo's lap - but he moved closer anyway, even sitting next to him on the sofa. The cat was glaring at him, as usual.
"Thank you. I want to let her smell your hand; could you hold it a few inches in front of her?"
Jeska obeyed, his ears going back against his head, and from the glance his owner gave, he noticed it too. Just to make things worse.
The cat hissed at his hand; he did not pull it back. He wasn't going to be intimidated by some fucking house cat.
"Easy there," Leo murmured, gently petting the cat. "He won't bite, it's okay."
Jeska sat there, feeling stupid, holding out his hand in front of this tiny animal until finally, still watching him in suspicion, the cat stretched its head out and sniffed at his fingers.
"There, that's a good girl." He smiled at Jeska, looking genuinely pleased. "She'll get used to you eventually, not to worry."
"I'm not worried," Jeska muttered defensively, before hastily throwing on "sir."
To his surprise, his owner just smiled wider. "I'm sure you aren't. What about you? Will you get used to her?"
"Will you order me to?" he countered, then cringed, catching it only belatedly.
"No." Instead of the expected blow, Leo gently ran a hand through Jeska's hair. "I'm sorry, I was teasing you. I'll be more careful about that."
Jeska looked at the cat sitting contentedly in his owner's lap, and grudgingly admitted to himself that maybe he had been just a little jealous.
