Unexpected Visitor
Leofric clicked off the television and stretched, the motion gently dislodging a protesting Sayuri from his shoulder. "Sorry, neko-chan," he said, scratching his cat behind her indignant white ears. "I can't spend the whole day watching anime with you, you know?" Summer vacation was nearing an end, but it wasn't over yet. Even if he had finished all of his preparation for upcoming classes and was left with nothing to do except watch anime.
Sayuri purred in response, rubbing her head against his hand before hopping onto the floor and sauntering away.
Ten minutes later, he closed the door behind him and stepped out into the street, heading for Doomsday and the dojo. Summer vacation might mean no classes, but he still opened the dojo for practice and lessons every afternoon. Which had been a particular blessing this summer, what with Cya's latest (and problematic) Kept following around like... how had she put it, a lost puppy? A lost puppy who snapped and snarled at strangers, maybe. Luring the kid into lessons with the rest of his Students was helping a little, at least.
Leofric smiled ruefully at himself. That "kid" was a Named Adult, however much Leo kept thinking of him otherwise. It was hard not to think of him as a student, though; he acted like one more often than not.
But that was neither here nor there. Leofric pushed it out of his mind, tossing cheerful greetings to passersby as he made the relatively short walk to the school grounds. By the time he got there, his train of thought had settled firmly on his current batch of students and what he was going to focus on teaching them today.
Opening the door, he heard Nanaya calling out kata and smiled. Class didn't officially start for another ten minutes, but his Students were nothing if not enthusiastic. He looked inside onto the training floor itself and froze, one foot up on the wooden floor, the other still in his shoe.
"Luke!" Leofric could've kicked himself; he should have taken a moment to assess the situation first. (Plus it was rude.) Quickly pulling himself back together, he slipped off his other shoe and hurried over to where Luke was standing - with Apollo - before giving a polite bow. "sa'Hunting Hawk."
"jae'Lightning Blade." Luke gave a nod in reply.
A barely perceptible ripple went through Leo's Students; Nanaya had stopped and brought to attention as he came in, but hearing the honorific Luke used caught them all by surprised. Leofric still found himself quietly proud at how little reaction they did show.
"It's been a while." Leo relaxed away from the formalities with a wide smile. "I didn't know you'd be coming."
"I didn't tell anyone." Luke nodded towards the mats, where his Students were still standing and awaiting further instruction as other students started arriving. "Apollo was telling me about training with your students."
"Good things, I hope," Leofric replied cheerfully. "Give me a sec?" Without waiting for Luke's reply, he turned to the class and clapped his hands together sharply, then directing his Students to prepare for class in quick Japanese. They bowed in unison before gathering at the other side of the room, glancing back at Luke and talking under their breath.
"There." He turned back to Luke. "I'll be starting class in a few minutes; would you like to stay and watch?"

I love Leo standing there with one shoe on. And I'm liking Nanaya more and more!
I want a Japanese person to end up somehow on this continent...

I wonder how much Japanese culture changes in those seventy years...
