If Leo noticed his old Mentor's change of expression at Ciara's name, he didn't show it, letting the conversation shift back as though it hadn't changed.
"Almost never," he agreed. His gaze glanced from Luke to Apollo, then to the last few students hurrying into the dojo. "But the only really fair fight is one you can both afford to lose."
"What... but..." Apollo was speechless - not an effect that surprised Leo at all, with him having been cy'Luca. What did take him by surprise was Luke's expression; if he didn't know better, he'd think his old Mentor was impressed. (And he wasn't entirely sure he did know better.)
"If you had a choice between 'cheating' in a fight," he said, looking at Apollo, "and letting your friends get hurt, what would you do?"
Apollo hesitated, giving a cautious sidelong look at Luke (who was once again his usual stern-looking self) before answering. "Cheat."
"Exactly." Leo smiled. "How you win a fight is less important than what you do with having won. Or, well. That's what I tell my Students." He glanced at Luke; Apollo wasn't Leo's Student - hadn't been, wasn't going to be. And he didn't want to be stepping on Luke's toes, even if Apollo wasn't technically his Student anymore either.
Luke nodded slowly, to Leo's relief. "It's a reasonable lesson."
"But is it honorable?" Apollo chewed on his lip, looking uncomfortable.
Honorable. It was such a cy'Luca thing to say. It was something, maybe, that he would have said himself, if things had gone differently all those years ago.
"Honor only goes so far," he said, just loud enough for the two others to hear. Leo's thoughts drifted to the scar on his cheek, to how he'd gotten it-- He shook his head, a small gesture, dismissing that train of thought, and smiled at the other two. "I should start class; are you joining today, Apollo?"
Apollo looked between Luke and Leo again, then nodded slowly "If that's okay?"
"Of course." Leo nodded back, then turned to Luke with a mischievous smile. "And if you feel like a little sparring afterwards, I think the class'd enjoy the demonstration."
"I'd like that." Luke, amazingly enough, grinned back.
