It's Been One Week
"It's boooring."
"Boring?" Vid raised his eyebrows at his daughter. She'd been at school for a week; by some reckonings of time, it was only a week. By hers, it was clearly way too long.
She responded to his expression by rolling her eyes. "That's what I said. Boring. They make us sit in a room all day, every day, listening to Miss Ascha and doing schoolwork."
"School work, hm? At school?" Vid didn't bother trying to hide the amusement in his voice. "How dare they."
Sweetbriar wrinkled her nose at him. "It's still boring. Not like home."
"No," he agreed. "It's nothing like home, but different doesn't have to be boring. What about your classmates?"
"They're okay," she admitted reluctantly. "Some of them."
"They're not boring?" Vid smiled in amusement.
"Austin's not bad. He's going to be a samurai, like grampa Leo." She paused, then rolled her eyes again. "I mean, Professor Inazuma."
Vid couldn't help it; he broke into laughter. Sweetbriar was adapting to school life better than he'd expected. Then again, what he'd expected, he had described to 'Rilla as "kicking and screaming the whole way", so that wasn't saying much, was it?
Well, "kicking and sassing back the whole way" was better, for most definitions of better.
"Miss Ascha lectured us on the 'proper way to address the teachers' after I did that last time." Sweetbriar's tone made her opinion of that kind of formality blatantly obvious.
"I'm sure your grandfather appreciates it," Vid replied mildly. "What about your other classmates?"
She shrugged in eloquent dismissal. "I guess they're all right. But they're all happy being stuck inside."
"Ahhh." Vid was starting to see where the problem was. "Inside the city, you mean."
"There's a park near the school but it's so small and there's no trees and I want to go home." Sweetbriar flung herself at her father and hugged him tightly. "It's--"
"Boring, I know." He returned the hug and patted her back reassuringly. "You'll find plenty of things to have fun with, I'm sure. But until then..." Vid reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, odd-looking planter - one he'd made up himself, to bring some plants from home to keep him company when travelling. "Would you like me to plant this in your room?"
"...Really? Miss Ascha will get mad," Sweetbriar said delightedly.
Vid chuckled. "Will she?"
"Yeah, but that's okay." Sweetbriar gently took the plant, grinning. "It'll be fun."
